OM471 engine parts: what fits, what fails, what we stock

The OM471 is the 12.8-litre inline-six that Mercedes-Benz built for the Actros, Antos and Arocs, and for coaches on the same driveline. It runs common rail injection with an asymmetric turbocharger and, depending on the version, exhaust gas recirculation alongside SCR.

The engine went through two generations with different cylinder heads, injectors and engine management. The number on the block, in the form OM471.9xx, tells you which one you are working on; the model year does not.

Where it is fitted

Actros, Antos and Arocs trucks, coaches with the same power unit, and stationary versions of the same block.

What typically fails

Injector copper sleevesCoolant in the oil on this engine almost always starts at the sleeve around the injector. Replacing the head before checking the sleeves is an expensive way to learn that.
Valve bridges and rocker gearNoise under load and clearances that drift out of specification point at the bridges and the rocker assembly rather than at the valves themselves.
EGR coolerOn versions with recirculation the cooler cracks internally and pushes coolant into the exhaust side, which shows as white smoke and a slowly falling expansion tank.
Asymmetric turbochargerThe turbine on this engine is fed unevenly by design, so an oil supply problem kills it faster than on a conventional unit. Check the feed line before fitting a replacement.
Oil separator and crankcase breatherA blocked separator raises crankcase pressure and pushes oil past the seals; the leak you can see is rarely where the fault is.
